Gratitude, by definition it is the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness. Have you seen people praying before their meal? or before they go to sleep? Some even pray when they get up in the morning. If you read scriptures, you may notice that the sages and priests worshiped almost every material thing found in this universe. What is the reason behind showing all this gratitude? These sages brought it in our culture and today we too follow it. some follow it knowingly while others just follow it blindly. Lets dig more into the reason why these people showed gratitude towards everything around us?

This goes back to the olden days when sages wrote all these scriptures (Vedas, Upanishads, Quran, Bible, etc). They found out that Para Brahman (Supreme God or ultimate truth or reality or energy or Allah or Jesus Christ or whatever you call it) is present in each and everything that is around us. Everything was created by it and will eventually return to it. Because of it nature exists. Because of it we exists. Because of it our life exists. Big bang is caused by it and Black hole is caused by it as well. So what do we do to someone who is stronger than us and has ownership of everything? We show them respect and gratitude. Thats what these sages and priests did. They showed gratitude to everything. It gave rise to Yajna – (ritual of offerings accompanied by chanting of Vedic mantras).
Sri Krishna in Bhagavad gita Chapter 3 (Karma Yoga) – Verse 13 says –

The devotees of the Lord are released from all kinds of sins because they eat food which is offered first for sacrifice. Others, who prepare food for personal sense enjoyment, verily eat only sin.

Even the greeting – ‘Namaste’ means showing gratitude and respect to other person. If you see old temples, you might also have seen the statues of elephants and other animals around the temple. Elephants were extensively used to build large temples. The temple architects build their statues around the temple as a symbol of gratitude for all the help they had provided.

Gratitude - Namaste

Gratitude – Namaste

We have this false ego about ourself and our achievements. But actually if you sit and think over it you will realize that you have done nothing. Its the energy inside us which is responsible for all our thoughts and actions. Good or Bad whatever it is. We are dependant on the things around us. We cannot create this world or universe around us. We just use it to fulfil our own needs. and we use it for free. So isn’t it our duty to at-least show gratitude to whatever things we get from this world?
In reality, when you realize that you have this false ego about yourself, you will automatically start showing gratitude towards everything. It will keep your feets on ground. You will also realize that the world does not need you, but you need this world to live. Even if you stay alone you are dependant on the world around you for food, for water, etc. When you will realize this, then you will become harmless and calm. You will not cause any damage to anything around you. I sincerely request to all the readers to try it by yourself. Be grateful to that power who created us. Be it Allah, or Christ or Rama. Everything is that. I hope this explains why we should have an Attitude of Gratitude towards everything.
A real prayer is one which says “Thank You” to the god for whatever good or bad it has given to us.

Thank you for your patience and reading this article.
